Play forward — No Back Way.
-

Thousands of Gambians attempt irregular migration every year
Despite awareness campaigns, thousands of young Gambians continue to leave the country annually using dangerous irregular routes across the desert and sea, particularly toward Europe via North and West Africa
-

The Backway is one of the deadliest migration routes in the world
In recent years, hundreds to over a thousand Gambians have died each year attempting the journey, mainly at sea, with many boats disappearing without trace and families receiving no closure
-

The Gambia is one of the highest per-capita source countries for irregular migration
Due to its small population, The Gambia has consistently ranked among the top African countries per capita for irregular migration to Europe, particularly during peak years and recent surges
-

Most migrants are young people leaving due to lack of opportunity, not lack of ambition
The majority of those taking the Backway are youth seeking education, employment, and a better future. Many are driven by economic hardship and limited opportunities at home rather than a desire to leave The Gambia permanently
Using the medium of football, we empower communities, educate youth, and say no to the back way.
Youth migration from The Gambia is largely driven by limited economic opportunities, unemployment, and the pressure many young people feel to support their families. For years, the so-called “back way” has been seen by some as a shortcut to success, despite the serious risks and uncertainty involved. GYFA is working to change this narrative by promoting education, skills development, and local opportunities.
On the field
Golden Youth Football Academy works on the field to develop talent, discipline, and opportunity through structured football training. We run a competitive third division team that gives young players real match experience and a pathway into senior football, while our academy trains boys aged 8–18 in the fundamentals of the game. Through regular training, league matches, and mentorship, we help young people build skills, confidence, and a future at home—using football as a tool for growth, teamwork, and positive life choices.
Off the field
Off the field, Golden Youth Football Academy is committed to combating irregular migration by engaging young people in education, mentorship, and awareness. Through life-skills sessions, community discussions, and guidance from coaches and role models, we educate players and their families about the dangers of the “back way” and promote positive alternatives. By combining football with values, responsibility, and hope, we help young people see that a safe and meaningful future can be built at home.
Events in the U.K.
Events in The Gambia
GYFA host events in the UK—including but not limited to; art exhibitions, comedy shows, and football tournaments. These events not only raise essential funds but also raise awareness and build bridges between UK and Gambian communities. By engaging the public through art, sport, and entertainment, we aim to foster cross-cultural understanding and highlight both the challenges and potential of Gambian youth.
GYFA have organised and held a number of exciting and well-structured tournaments throughout The Gambia, consistently promoting the core values of fair play, youth engagement, and overall community development. These carefully planned and thoughtfully executed events have been instrumental in fostering teamwork, discipline, and positive personal growth among young participants. Additionally, these tournaments have served as important platforms for exposure, where trainees have been scouted and signed by professional clubs.
